Enlocus have been engaged by the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre to provide pro-bono landscape architectural services for their critical new, large-scale Dandenong Services Hub. The design will reclaim approximately 50% of the existing carpark to construct a terraced outdoor social area. ‘The Garden’ will enable the essential delivery of place-based holistic services and will create a gathering place which can accommodate activities and events. With the facility’s Food Bank in mind, the space proposes an edible garden with herb varieties originating from such locations as Syria, to be incorporated in meals prepared by staff and volunteers. The key feature of the centre’s landscape design will be its “story tree” – symbolic of community resilience, rejuvenation, rebirth, regeneration and identity – as well as a symbol of the growth of the ASRC since its inception in 2001, and its ongoing importance in providing vital services to those in need.
